Pedagogy and Process
I am committed to creating a curriculum that implements these 4 major components:
Social Justice Art
Arts Integration
Social, Emotional and Physical Learning through the Arts
Art Therapy Practices
Social Justice Art
We can learn about our full history which includes the stories of the "marginalized" into the singular fold of our overall human story. In highlighting the history of people of color, the disenfranchised, the systemically oppressed, our children carry-on legacies and give voice to remarkable members of our past, present, and sets them up to do so for our future.
Arts Integration
Children learn best when they can consider topics and ideas when they get multiple opportunities to think about singular "topics" through multiple lens. Art is not a tool. Art is a discipline of thought and a practiced language. Children can learn more about Art through the implementation of a variety of other academic subjects. Children can learn more about art as a language through the collaboration of multiple subjects. Overall, children learn more about theirselves, their communities and their global network.
Social, Emotional, and Physical Learning through the Arts
Art studios and communities provide an excellent meeting ground to practice SEL skills. We have to acknowledge that discussions and creations help us to process emotions that may or may not lead to societal expectations of proper management. The intention is to give students tools to flex and use for a variety of different scenarios.
Art Therapy Practices
Art does heal. When humans are given space and opportunity to reflect, re-present their world, and respond then they are progressing with personal goals and needs. The studio is a sacred, meditative space for all members to come and feel equity and liberation.
