Kandice Stewart Bio

Beyond being a proud mother of three amazing human beings, she is a Doctoral student at Columbia University studying the impact of visual arts praxis in the public sector. She has partnered with the Metropolitan Museum of Art, University of Florida’s Art Education program, and the NY Historical Society to offer ways of knowing and sharing the expansive human experience through art. She has helped other Art educators at Teacher’s College, CCNY City College, the Art of Education University, and the Academy of Fellows to think critically and creatively about their personal arts praxis and pedagogy. She believes that art is the present opportunity to connect with yourself, others and the world. She promotes that motivation, compassion, and love are strong avenues for creating opportunities for students to share their voice. She aims to bring students into a place of seeing their creative selves and our human story explained through art in a mutually safe space.

I navigate this world as a Mother, Educator, Community Leader, and Friend.

I am excited about Art and all of its tools and magic! I make works of art that are not about a pleasurable product rather I focus on the process and healing intentions of an art piece and what it offers the artist and, possibly, the viewer. I revel in the stories that come out of the experience either by myself or others.

What makes my work unique is that materiality becomes a higher intention than personal choice. Therefore, my art is made with whatever is available and the tools and emotions bend to the experience.

I was born in NYC. I believe that art is love, connection, spirit, energy, life, and healing. I am a proud mother of two amazing human beings and a Doctoral student at Teachers College studying the impact of therapeutic arts praxis in public schools.

My work centers on the here and now, while being cognizant of the power of reflection. My intention is to convince those who don’t see themselves as artists or art consumers to take part in implementing Art at high-quality because it supports the momentum of Social, Emotional, and Physical Learning. I specialize in designing art curricula with SEL at the heart. I am a collaborative educator and hope to share my journey and learn about yours as well!
